How to get more natural light in your home?

Natural light is key for any healthy, happy home, and if you’re big on bright and open spaces, you’ll want to encourage as much natural light as possible into your property. This can often feel difficult to do if you’ve got a smaller property or one with limited windows, but it’s never impossible with the right know-how and creative thinking.

Here are some ideas for getting more natural light into your home.

Use more mirrors

Mirrors not only make a room look and feel bigger, but they’re also perfect for reflecting light from windows. If you can position mirrors in the right place, this can allow more natural light to reflect around the room, creating a brighter space that feels much bigger than it is.

Introduce more reflective surfaces

Working in the same way as mirrors to reflect more natural light around the room, you might want to introduce reflective furniture, too. You could try for glass tables or furniture which has a sheen to it so that sunlight can easily bounce off, rather than dull material like wood.

If you’re a fan of upcycling, you can even apply your own reflective sheen to furniture yourself.

Replace your windows

One of the most obvious ways to encourage more natural light is with your windows. If your current windows are too small, positioned in the wrong places, or maybe even non-existent in certain rooms, then upgrading your windows will be the best way to allow more natural light to filter through. Even if you have an awkwardly-shaped property, experts like Home Counties Joinery will know how to tailor window shapes to your particular home so that you can always enjoy the benefits of natural light.

Think differently about your doors

If you have doors leading out into the garden or outside space, you might want to think about replacing standard doors with French doors or even a wall of glass doors that open out into the garden. This is a great way to entice more natural light throughout the day and also helps to create a more cohesive space between the outside and inside for a sociable space.

Consider skylights

This is a great option if you have the means to do so, such as with a ground floor extension or an attic conversion. Skylights can really transform the feel of a room and are ideal for having a source of sunlight from dawn until dusk, especially when equipped with skylight blinds for better control over brightness and privacy.

Don’t overdo your window dressing

If you’re fortunate enough to have large, bright windows, then you don’t want to subdue the natural light by overcrowding with blinds or thick curtains. Thinner curtains and voiles can be great for allowing more light to come through, and blinds can be a better option if you’re looking to make the most of the entire window rather than the sides being blocked off by curtains.

Reconsider the rooms you use

You might have a room that gets the most amount of sunlight but is only used as a spare room or storeroom. Try to decide your room layouts based on which get the most natural light so that you can get the best out of them.
