Clever Ways To Let More Natural Light Into Your Home

Although we tend to spend a lot of our time bathed in the glow of our various devices, the truth is that there is no substitute for natural daylight.

In fact, not getting enough exposure to sunlight on a regular basis can have a negative impact on both your mental and physical well-being. As a result, if you’re keen to stay as healthy and happy as possible, then finding ways to let more natural light into your home can be a big help.

With that aim in mind, here are some clever suggestions for how to fill your abode with more sunlight. In no time, your home will feel lighter, airier and become an even more pleasant place to be. Now that’s money well spent!

Install More Windows

The obvious first step, if you want more rays of sunlight streaming in, is to add more windows to your home. If you don’t have the available wall space for this, never fear – you can opt to install roof skylights instead with the help of Roof Window Outlet.

They have a wide range of windows for you to choose from, designed for both flat and pitched roofs. Having roof skylights fitted into your home will instantly bring in an abundance of natural light, which will help to lift your mood – especially during the long dark winter months when every minute of natural light is precious.

Embrace The Power Of Reflection

Yes, reflection – but, in this case, not the spiritual kind. If you have a particularly tight budget, or if you’re keen to offset the gloom of winter (which can cause many of us to struggle with symptoms of SAD), then you can use reflective surfaces such as mirrors and metallic objects to beam more light around each room.

Hanging mirrors opposite windows can bounce the sunshine onto the surrounding walls and instantly create a brighter and cheerier space. Opting for furnishings and accessories with metallic accents, and choosing chrome fittings in your kitchen and bathrooms, can have a similar ‘lightening’ effect.

Paint The Walls

To help maximise the levels of brightness in your home, you can paint the walls and ceilings gleaming white.

While you may not want to do this for your whole house, as you might favour different colour schemes for different areas, you can certainly lighten up a particularly dim room using this tried and tested decorating technique.

Dress Your Windows With Care

Another helpful decorating tip that will allow more natural light into your home is to use thinner and more light-coloured window treatments, such as white or pale-coloured curtains or blinds. These will let more daylight through than dark-coloured lined curtains or blinds.

You should also make sure to leave your curtains and blinds open for as long as possible during the day to maximise the amount of sunshine that can get through. It’s also a good idea to inspect each room and see if any items of furniture could be blocking some of your windows – and the light.

Conclusion

There’s no doubt about it – natural light is good for both body and mind. So if you can make a few simple changes around the home to allow more sunshine into your life, your mental and physical well-being is bound to benefit.
