What Services Does a Typical Small Scale Logistics Company Offer?

Although there are many logistics companies that operate globally and have massive reach, the majority are relatively regional in nature. They offer their services primarily in their local state or country, which enables them to take on more jobs. Here is a quick guide to some of the services that a typical small-scale logistics company tends to offer.

Pallet Network

Pallet networks are made up of collaborating businesses and haulers that provide cost-effective delivery services thanks to the modular and predictable nature of pallet stored items. Wooden pallets were designed in conjunction with the first forklift trucks and have since become a highly standardized method for the movement of goods. Small logistics companies often join or form pallet networks due to their flexibility and the sheer quantity of work that they offer up. The larger a pallet network is, the more that both clients and haulers benefit from economies of scale.

Container Carriage

Shipping containers have completely revolutionized the world of logistics. These steel boxes were first standardized during World War Two and now carry the vast majority of the world’s international trade. Many small logistics companies specialize in carrying shipping containers on specially built truck trailers. This can involve the carriage of containers from a port to a distribution center or from a distribution center to the final destination of the container. Loading containers onto a truck is extremely easy if the right tools are used.

First And Last Mile

First and last mile operations are the bread and butter of regional logistics companies like STR logistics. Both first mile and last mile operations generally involve short regional haulage journeys – allowing a small company to take on many orders.

First mile operations involve the transport of a product or material from its source – or where it enters the country – to its distribution center. An example of a first mile operation would be the transfer of products from a factory to a retail company’s warehouse.

Last mile operations involve the transport of goods on the final leg of their journey: usually to consumer homes, but also to offices, factories, restaurants, and just about any other organization that orders products in bulk. The delivery of meat to restaurants is a good example of the last mile operation.

Logistics Planning

All businesses that use logistics services need to develop a long-term logistics strategy. In many cases, this strategy needs to be created with the help of a logistics company, and many of these companies offer logistics planning, License from Forklift Academy, and consultancy as a service.

The broad goals that should lie behind any logistics strategy should be universal: increased speed, decreased costs, and increased flexibility. Actually, achieving these goals usually involves some unique planning. Businesses need to assess the feasibility of outsourcing services, the role of emerging technologies, the streamlining of their inventories, and a whole lot more when making a plan. Defining small objectives that lead to the eventual achievement of large strategic goals is important.
