In their recent study, a virtual private network and cybersecurity company, ExpressVPN, found that over half of the 2,000 children they surveyed that are aged between 4 to 13 admit to using social media. Thankfully, their parents are often monitoring their social media usage. However, as we know, it’s not always easy to prevent our children from becoming victims of things like cyberbullying and harassment.
In fact, 59 percent of the parents surveyed said they’re most worried about their children being bullied online. Their next concern revolves around their kid being groomed by online predators and fears that their children might come across offensive content.
As the internet and devices like smartphones and tablets become increasingly integrated into our daily lives, it’s essential to ensure that children use them safely and responsibly.
Below, we share a few tips that parents can consider to help keep their children safe online:
Set clear rules and boundaries around using electronic devices
Parents should set clear boundaries on the types of electronic devices children can access, how often they can access them, and what sort of online activities, like social media, are allowed. By setting clear boundaries, parents aren’t limiting their children but instead allowing them to explore using electronic devices at a comfortable pace.
Monitor their online activity
Parents should regularly check their children’s internet history, social media accounts, and text messages to ensure they are not engaging in inappropriate behavior or communicating with strangers. Parents can take it one step further on social media and look at their children’s friends or connections list to ensure they’re only interacting with people they know.
Educate children about online safety
Children should be taught about the potential dangers of the internet, such as cyberbullying, online predators, and the importance of privacy. Conversations around social media and digital safety can begin at a young age or when a child receives their first electronic device.
Use parental controls and monitoring software
Many internet service providers, devices, and apps offer parental controls that allow parents to block certain websites, set time limits, and monitor their children’s online activity. These limits can be set and adjusted at various stages of a child’s life, which could help them learn about limits and time management when using devices.
Be a good role model
Children often model their online behavior after what they see from adults. Parents should be mindful of how they use the internet and the types of content they access. That said, if you’re friends with your child on social media, it’s important to demonstrate good behaviour so that they know what they can and cannot be posting online.
Keep the computer in a common area
It’s a good idea to keep the computer in a common area of the house so parents can easily monitor their children’s online activity.
Keep the conversation around cybersecurity going
Regularly talking to children about their online experiences can help parents understand their children’s online world and how to keep them safe. By doing this, parents can help create a sense of transparency with their children.
By following these tips, parents can help ensure that their children use the internet safely and responsibly. It’s important to remember that the internet can be an excellent resource for learning and communication. Still, it’s essential to be aware of the potential dangers and take steps to protect children from them.
