3 Things You Need to Know about Moles on Your Skin

Hearing the word ‘moles’, you will likely think of one of two things. One could be the small mammal, and the other, most commonly thought about, is skin growth.

Moles are common skin growths. Ranging in size, shape and colour, moles are caused when the cells in our skin grow in clusters. In some instances, moles can appear as flesh-coloured small bumps on the skin. In other cases, moles can appear as small and dark marks.

If you have noticed moles on your skin, here are a few things you should know.

Know The Type Of Moles

Moles can appear unexpectedly. For most people, moles can appear during their childhood. As a person ages, their moles may change in size, shape and colour. More often than not, moles are benign. The harmless skin growth is nothing for a person to be concerned about.

However, there are some instances where moles can be a sign of something more serious. Some moles can be cancerous. Melanoma skin cancer can be new moles or old ones that have changed in appearance. With 16,744 new cases of melanoma skin cancer occurring each year, it is more common than people might realise. Understanding the type of mole you have is essential in knowing what treatment to get.

Getting A Mole Removed

For some, moles can affect their self-esteem. They are weary of their mole being visible and will aim to hide it as much as possible. Others will seek treatment to get their mole removed. Some moles can be removed for free by the NHS. However, this is if your GP thinks your mole could be melanoma. If your mole is suspected of melanoma, you will be referred to a specialist for further treatment and tests.

If your mole is benign, look into mole removal services. There are plenty of clinics, such as Linia Skin, that offer excellent mole removal services. Utilise the services available to help you move one step closer to getting your mole removed. Recovery time will likely be between two to three weeks, potentially more or less, depending on how you heal.

Seeking Medical Attention

If you are unsure whether your mole is cancerous, consider seeking medical attention. Their expert opinion will help guide you on the best course of action for treating your mole. The visit to your doctor for your mole will likely be a short and quick inspection. They will ask questions about when it first appeared and how quickly it has changed. This will help them conclude whether your mole is benign or potentially cancerous.

Additionally, seeking medical attention can help to offer peace of mind. If your doctor’s inspection concludes that nothing is alarming about your mole or the change in its appearance, you can relax knowing there is nothing to be concerned about.

If you have an existing mole or notice one appear, monitor it for further changes. Monitoring any changes with your mole can help you to seek medical advice should you become concerned about any changes you notice.
