Is there a link between improved fitness and winning in professional golf? These days, the answer is certainly yes, although this wasn’t always seen as the case. If you love golf check out Big Horn Golfer.

The inescapable truth now is that the fitter you are, the far better chance you have of winning. For example, you only need to look at the latest betting odds for the biggest competitions of 2023 to get a better understanding of how the PGA Tour’s fittest players are tipped to do well.

The muscle man tipped to win the Masters

In particular, these golf latest betting odds for the upcoming Masters paint a revealing picture given that the powerful Jon Rahm is tipped to win the event at Augusta National after being priced at just 8/1 to do so. The burly Spaniard is, of course, renowned for his explosive gym routine that focuses on powerlifting, dynamic stretching, and drills to assist with added mobility.

Unsurprisingly, it is this demanding gym schedule that has assisted Rahm in getting to number one in the official world rankings and also helped him win the 2021 US Open.

The proof, as you can see, is all around; if a player adopts a rigorous training schedule, they are unquestionably increasing their chances of finishing at the top of the leaderboard on Sunday afternoon.

Routine exercise was far from the norm for decades

Golf in tandem with exercise was a foreign concept for a long time – so much so that people often laughed off any suggestion that you had to be fit to gain any advantage. It is for these reasons that the game of golf has, for the longest time, been referred to as a hobby and not a professional sport.

This isn’t to suggest that players of the past weren’t elite athletes because they certainly were. Indeed, a crucial part of winning in golf is having the mental fortitude to outlast your opponents. Needless to say, at the highest level, only the strongest minds in the profession are able to successfully do this.

So with this being the case and on top of their phenomenal ability with the golf club, these players were, undeniably, exceptionally talented sportspeople. The only difference was that no one on tour was in the gym before Tiger Woods arrived, which meant that players weren’t at a disadvantage by not regularly exercising.

However, once the Big Cat burst onto the scene, profound and lasting change swept the whole golf world.

Tiger changes golf for good

During the early days, Woods’ unprecedented fitness regimen was gruelling and intense. The young prodigy lifted weights, ran sprints, and practised yoga to improve his strength, endurance, and flexibility. The 15-time major champion golfer also worked with fitness experts to develop a customised exercise plan that was tailored to his specific needs as a golfer.

Importantly, Woods’ overall influence on fitness in professional golf has not just been limited to the players since he joined the PGA Tour in the mid-1990s. The 47-year-old also inspired a new generation of golf trainers and coaches who have built careers out of developing training programmes for their clients.

Ultimately, this has led to a new era of golf coaching that strongly emphasises the importance of physical fitness and its role in achieving consistent success on the course. It is safe to say now that whichever way you look at it, there is a solid and irrefutable link between success on the golf course and being fit.
