The dating scene is complex in 2023. Social media platforms, especially TikTok, and blogs are stacked full of content telling us “Top Tips for Dating…”. Even though dating can feel like a minefield, you’ll be pleased to know that the era of endless scrolling through Tinder has come to an end; people are much more mindful of the people they interact with. With this in mind, let’s take a look at five trends shaping the modern dating scene.
Conscious Swiping
Dating apps have become a central part of dating because mobile technology is integrated into everything society does. In the past, people using apps like Tinder used to swipe mindlessly and spark up conversations with anyone, but this rarely ended with a successful date or blossoming relationship.
In 2023, people will be much more self-aware, which is why swiping has shifted to a more conscious state. By swiping smartly, daters have much more control and power, which leads to more successful dates because there’s mutual intention.
A Growth in Polyamory
Over the last decade, conventional norms have been cast aside; individuality is encouraged and celebrated. This rejection of traditional societal expectations is why polyamory is on the rise. If you didn’t know already, a polyamorous relationship involves having more than one mutually agreed romantic or intimate relationship.
Although polyamory isn’t strictly a new trend, it’s only recently become widely accepted and talked about. As you may have guessed, seeking other polyamorous people is even more challenging, which is why there’s been an explosion in polyamory dating app availability.
Infla-Dating
Everyone in the UK has been touched by inflation at some point, so it makes sense the dating world will have been impacted. People have less money to spend on dating, so Plenty of Fish came up with the term “Infla-dating”.
Data gathered by PoF found that almost half of Gen-Z and Millennials on their platform had suggested going on a “cheaper date”. This information is backed up by analytics from the Tinder camp as well, with the swipe giant finding that dinner dates may soon be dead; picnics, drive-ins, and mini-gold are taking its place.
Dating Sober
Wellness is a driving force in 2023’s society, and it’s why people are consuming much less alcohol, especially when they’re on dates. According to research from Tinder’s “Year in Swipe”, drink-related emojis have decreased on their platform by around 40% and people are only listing “moderate drinking” on their profiles.
Eliminating Situationships
Situationships happen when two people date for a long time with zero signs of progression, which is frustrating at best. Circumstances brought on by the global pandemic allowed people the time to work on themselves. Essentially, this has given daters the confidence to stand up for themselves and say what’s on their mind, which is why fewer people are putting up with situations.
Dating has changed for the better. People are more aware of what they want out of dating, and they understand that the experience has to be positive instead of mentally taxing.
