How to Make Your Home Feel More Open

No one likes to feel like the walls are closing in on them. However, if you are not able to move to a larger property (as many people aren’t), sometimes all you can do is make the most of the space you have.

It’s time to learn how to work with what you have to help make your home feel more open. Fortunately, this piece is going to show you how.

Knock Down Some Walls

If you own your house and are able to do some renovations, then one of the best ways to give the illusion of more space is to open up a room literally.

If you are thinking of knocking down some walls, bear in mind that you can only choose walls that are not structurally supporting the building – make sure to get a professional involved before you take a hammer to your living room.

You could also open up certain areas with glass if that is an option, such as your staircase; take a look at stair glass panels for more information.

Opening up a room in this way can give your home more flow between each area and help everything feel just that little more spacious.

Maximise Natural Light

Natural light really does help in making an area feel more open, so if you can, try and maximise that as much as possible in every room.

Sheer curtains or blinds are a great way to keep your privacy while still letting the sun in, and if you can position your furniture near the windows, that can help you feel like you are close to the outside and fresh air.

Choose Your Colors Carefully

Dark and dingy colours can easily make a room feel small and cramped, as light is absorbed by them rather than reflecting them. You will want colours to bounce around your room, making it appear bright and more spacious.

Neutral colours on your walls, floor, and ceiling will help to reflect light all over the room, helping it to feel open. You will also want to bear this colour guide in mind for furniture and accessories too!

Use Mirrors Strategically

Place mirrors on walls opposite windows or in areas where they can reflect light and create an illusion of depth. This can help give the impression of a larger space, making your home feel more open.

Get Decluttering

One of the best ways to make sure your house feels more open and spacious is to get rid of anything clogging it up. Cut down on stuff by getting rid of unnecessary items and focus on organising your belongings so everything has a place – the less clutter, the more open and spacious room appears. Don’t forget to invest in some great storage solutions to keep things tidy and hidden either.

Remember, making your home feel more open is about creating a sense of space. Make sure to allow for decent light flow and movement to help you visually open up areas if you can’t make physical changes.
