How to create a beautiful garden you’ll actually spend time in?

Not everyone has an outdoor space belonging to them, but for those with gardens, it can either be a constantly rewarding place of relaxation and harmony with nature or a disappointing and unwelcoming embarrassment. Life can get in the way of making improvements to your garden, especially since most essential lifestyle habits occur indoors. However, if you are lucky enough to own a patch of land, a patio, or even a balcony, here are a few ways you can maximise your enjoyment of the space.

1. Consider the greenery

Are you a keen gardener with a green thumb and a desire to truly connect with nature in all its glory? Or do you prefer looking at plants rather than caring for them? Either way, adding greenery to your outdoor space or caring for what’s already there can make such a difference to your enjoyment. For example, if you love plants but haven’t got a lawn, cultivate potted plants or build wooden soil boxes to serve as large planters. If you prefer that your greenery takes care of itself, look into low-maintenance outdoor plants that thrive in the weather conditions of your location. Having even just a splash of green in your garden can enliven the space and encourage you to spend more time outdoors. Take a look at some of these gardening tips, and maybe you’ll be inspired:

  • Establish where the sun comes from in relation to your garden to determine where best to position different plants and furniture.
  • Perform a soil test to find out which kinds of plants will thrive in your garden.
  • Learn how to sow seeds properly and nurture new growth.
  • Understand the needs of different plants, including when to water and feed them.
  • Don’t be afraid of composting. Know its benefits and proper uses.
  • Research local pests and weeds to find out ways to prevent them from damaging your garden.
  • Also, research the wildlife your plants will be interacting with and bear in mind the value of preserving insect species.

2. Create different zones

Having distinct sections of your garden might help you feel that it has more structure and purpose, inviting you to use it more regularly. For example, a vegetable patch at one end and an outdoor dining space at the other can imitate the rooms of a house. Invest in External Shading to make the area even more appealing throughout the seasons, protecting you from the elements. If you have children, an area with play equipment and toys can exist alongside an elegant garden swing or bench for you to enjoy a cup of tea at. Different sections add depth and interest to a space.

3. Purpose

If you want to use your garden more but feel that you don’t even have a reason to step out into it, give the space a purpose. Bring your hobbies out into the open or build a play area for your family. If you have an active social life, a summer house can double up as a garden cocktail bar. Make an effort to perceive it as an important and useful part of your home. Instead of letting your garden shed become cluttered and rotten, set up a small workshop or sitting area. Decorate a small reading nook among the plants to enjoy your personal time. Giving the space a purpose will make it easier for you to imagine yourself out there.

4. Maintenance

As mentioned previously, if you are the kind of person who loves a challenge and is already naturally drawn to the idea of gardening, maintaining your outdoor space might not seem like such a daunting prospect. To everyone else, however, it’s understandable that having to maintain the area as it weathers the elements might be too great a task to fit in with other life priorities. Know your limits, and don’t push yourself too hard. It’s about enjoying your garden, not turning it into a chore. Though, there are few alternatives on your garden accessories for the sake of convenience. For example, instead of using organic grass, there are variations like fake grass to keep the maintenance minimum. Though, you’re still gonna figure out how to clean artificial grass.

5. Aesthetic appeal

Perhaps the main reason you don’t feel encouraged to spend time in your garden is that it simply isn’t visually appealing to you. Humans are surprisingly sensitive to the beauty of their surroundings, and the difference between a pleasant and unpleasant environment can impact our ability to relax or concentrate. Take the time to look at garden inspiration, either in magazines or online, and figure out what you like the look of. Within your own budget and abilities, do your best to create an aesthetically appealing space that invites you to spend time in it. Take inspiration from your own interiors if you have a strong sense of style and clear artistic vision.
