8 Genius Ways to Make Your New House Feel Like Home

Moving into a new house is incredibly exciting. At the same time, it can also be quite daunting and overwhelming. The first few weeks – and even months – can feel alien. This is because it lacks the ‘homely’ feeling that you’ve been used to for so long.

Here’s the good news: it won’t take long for your new house to feel like home. You can speed up the process by following the eight genius suggestions that this guide has got in store for you. Whether you’ve moved into a modest 2-bedroom home or a large 5-bedroom home, these suggestions will work for everyone.

Ready? Read ahead!

1. Spruce Up the Loft

In your old house, you likely used your loft as a spare bedroom or games room. Providing there’s enough space in your new loft, you should spruce it up, too.

Start by adding one of these loft ladders. From there, you can get to work on choosing fresh flooring, wall paint, and décor.

Remember, the loft is typically the hardest place to decorate in a new home. Once that’s out of the way, the rest of your house will be a piece of cake.

2. Add Your Favourite Candles and Fragrances

If you’re like most homeowners, you probably use candles and fragrances at night-time. So, immediately after moving into your new house, don’t hesitate to get your favourites out. The familiar smells will immediately relax you and help to make the environment around you feel just like home.

Plus, don’t be afraid to try new fragrances, too. For example, there are currently lots of incense sticks on the market, with jasmine and lavender being popular choices.

3. Put Some Wall Art Up

Presumably, you’ve brought all your old wall art with you. If so, you should put the different pieces up in all the main rooms, from your bedroom to the living room. When you see familiar artwork on the wall, it will give you a stronger sense of belonging in your new house.

Also, it’s highly recommended that you put up some framed photos of your family and friends, too. Over the years, you no doubt have tons of classic memories that have been captured in picture form, so don’t hesitate to display them on the walls, bookshelves, and other places.

4. Add Rugs and Throws

Rugs and throws are key accessories in any household. They add warmth and comfortability, especially during the wintertime. So, whether you want to use your current ones or replace them with fresh alternatives, don’t hesitate to do it! Immediately after your rugs and throws have been spread throughout the house, it will feel like another major box has been ticked. Whew.

5. Help to Familiarize Your Pets

As of 2022, 59% of UK households own a pet. Presumably, you’re one of them! Whether you own a cat or dog, there’s nothing better than a loyal pet.

Moving into a new house has likely been a stressful process for you – so just imagine how your pets are feeling! This is why it’s a smart idea to familiarize your pets with their new surroundings as quickly as possible. When they feel at home, you’ll feel more at home, as well.

You can help to settle your pets by taking them for regular walks around the new area. In addition to this, make sure to encourage them to explore the different rooms. It will also help if you put their basket in a comfortable and well-ventilated part of the home.

6. Get to Know Your Neighbours

One of the main reasons why a new house feels strange at first is because you don’t know the new people around you – specifically, the neighbours on both sides of your house. Therefore, it’s recommended you get to know your neighbours pretty quickly so that you can eliminate any awkwardness and become friends with them. Once you’re on friendly terms, you’ll feel a lot better about your new house.

Also, don’t be afraid to invite your neighbours over to join you for an evening drink, as this is a harmless way to chat and get to know one another!

7. Install Some Air Purifiers

The last thing you want in your new house is for the air to feel stuffy and warm. This is why you should take some time to buy a few air purifiers and install them throughout your house. Pretty soon, you’ll notice that the air feels a lot fresher and cosier, especially on warm days.

Don’t worry, you can buy air purifiers from most DIY stores. Alternatively, you can buy them online from platforms like eBay and Amazon.

Also, air purifiers are pretty cheap nowadays, which might come as a shock to you!

8. Upgrade the Shower

After moving in, you might not be too fond of the idea of using a shower that’s previously belonged to the old tenants – especially if they’ve lived there for quite a long time. This isn’t a problem: for a pretty low price, you can easily upgrade your shower. In fact, you can even have it designed to look similar to the one in your home if this would be appealing to you! Within a couple of weeks, you can have your new shower fitted by a tradesperson in your town.

If there’s a bath, you can upgrade that, too. After all, the bathroom is one of the most important places in any home, so it’s only right that you give it some extra special treatment.

Adding some new tiling is also a suggestion worth considering. No bathroom is complete without tiling that’s been chosen by the owners, so make sure to bear this in mind.

Summary

After reading this guide, you should now feel a lot more relaxed about moving into your new house. If you put the above-mentioned suggestions into action, it won’t take long before your new house feels just like home; somewhere you can be comfortable, happy, and peaceful!
