There is much debate and speculation on the history of the sash windows. That is because not everyone is sure about its origin and when it came. However, there is still a lot of history that we know of.

If you are interested in getting sash windows in Croydon for your home, you are in the right place. Here is a complete history to help you make an informed decision.

When Did The Invention Of Sash Windows Take Place?

Many people think that the origin of these windows lies with the Dutch. However, it appears that the sash window came about from the horizontal sliding sash. This was also known as the Yorkshire Sash at one time.

People thought that sash windows had come from Holland during the end of the 17th century. Others claim that these windows have a French origin as the word sash comes from the word chassis, which means frame. However, the earliest record of a sash window comes from the 16th century through W. Horman.

Types Of Sash Windows

As the sash windows came into being, there were many versions of it. Here are some of the most popular types of sash windows:

1. Victorian

Victorian sash windows were one of the top choices for people that wanted to add more character to their homes. Such windows included intricate mouldings, curved horns, latticework, and much more. Besides that, the size of the windows graduated from the ground and upwards.

Doing this improved the perspective of the window, and it also enhanced the light that came into the rooms. That is why they were ideal for capturing the best daylight.

2. Georgian

Even Georgian architecture has embraced sash windows completely. However, they have also taken the design one step further with their unique touch. That is because they have improved the design to two sliding sashes.

The classic design of Georgian sash windows includes six over six panes. Besides that, they also have narrow glazing bars. You will find them mostly at the rear of many buildings.

3. Edwardian

Yes, the Edwardian period was short, but the homes from these times still exist today. During this period, the most common windows were the double-hung Edwardian sash windows that incorporated six over two glazing styles. However, during the early 20th century, the side-hinged casement windows became even more popular.

As the century turned, sash windows became one of the most popular options for many households. However, in modern times, they are not as popular as they used to be.

Final Words

That was the complete history of the sash windows that you need to know about. The modern sash windows are much more refined and have a contemporary touch to them. Of course, the traditional design elements are still there that keep the integrity of the window style intact.

You can opt for sash windows for any style of home that you like. They can add a great touch to your home in no time.
