Tips for Homeowners Who Are Worried About the Environment

By Voucherix-C Leave a Comment

Worrying about the environment is only natural in today’s climate. However, among the many solutions available to homeowners, it can be challenging to distinguish those that fall within your budget from those that are particularly effective. If you are struggling to resolve your environmental concerns with the requirements and demands of your home, read on for some top tips on what you can do.

Install Solar Panels

Solar panels have been a solution for homes since the 1970s, and they have grown in popularity ever since, especially due to government green deals. Although you might be concerned about how long it will take to get a return on your investment, installing solar panels can put you on the road to renewable energy and can lift a lot of the worry that you may be feeling away from you. However, solar panels are generally more effective on homes that are south facing, as they will claim the most sunlight throughout the day. Even if you are not able to be completely self-sufficient using just solar panels, this can reduce your carbon footprint and allow you to feel proactive in your eco-warrior status. All you need to do is find a company that utilises and produces the latest solar panel technology for residential purposes.

Get an Eco Shower

Wasting water might be a major concern of yours, especially due to the lack of rainfall that the UK has experienced this spring. However, rather than constantly timing your shower and panicking if you are five seconds over two minutes, you should consider investing in an eco shower. These showers are both powerful while minimising the amount of water that you require to get completely drenched. You might even be able to put them on an eco mode that saves even more. There are also many different types of showerheads, including those that focus on water flow and aeration.

Install Eco Bulbs

The bulbs that you use in your home can make all the difference when it comes to minimising your energy usage. These will usually LED options. Although some homeowners find that they give off a dimmer light, they use less electricity and last for a longer period of time. However, even when you are using eco-friendly alternatives, it is still important that you turn lights off when you are exiting a room and that you only use them when it is dark within your home. Another way to reduce their usage is to improve the natural light in your home by cutting back greenery, installing mirrors, and expanding window frames.

Replace Your Windows

Windows can provide outlets for all the central heating that you are pumping into your abode, leaving it feeling incredibly chilly during the winter months, even if the heating is on. Rather than waiting to feel a draught, it is vital that you replace any single-glazed windows in your home with double or triple-glazed options and that you seal any gaps between your window and its frame. You must hire a seasoned professional to do this, though, or you might find that your window needs to be repaired in almost no time at all.

Get Improved Insulation

Almost every house has insulation, but not all of this is as good as it seems. If the insulation in your house is old or poor, you might find that heat escapes through your walls and attic. To prevent this, you should consider investing in new insulation for your home, and there are even grants that you can get for attic insulation. This can help you to keep your home toasty, whether you choose foam or fibreglass. There are pros and cons to each of these, including cost and availability. Getting insulation for your home is particularly paramount for older properties.

Stay Warm Without Central Heating

Another option that you have is to try and stay warm without the need for central heating. You can achieve this by installing a fireplace that runs on biofuel or by opting to layer up during the winter months. You could also invest in a number of soft furnishings, such as throws, blankets, and heavy black-out curtains. You might also look at swapping your heaters out for eco-alternatives that can reduce the amount of fossil fuels that you are burning to heat up your abode. This will allow you to stay warm without feeling guilty about the impact that you are having, or fretting that you need to do better.
