4 Steps to Optimise Your Garage Storage Systems

By Voucherix-C Leave a Comment

If you own a garage, you’re probably familiar with clutter. Yes, at first the garage is kept fairly organised, with plenty of room for tools, cleaning supplies and various other knick-knacks, but this scarcely lasts. Naturally, over time, garage storage becomes overwhelmed and the space falls victim to the clutter of life. Without optimisation, this can easily snowball into a mess that requires far too much time and effort to fix.

This article will offer some garage storage ideas and solutions so you can make more of your own space. With concepts ranging from increased clearance to vertical utilisation, you should feel more capable than ever to use the space efficiently.

1. Managing floor and ceiling clearance

All the space that’s used by items on the floor is space that you can’t use for better storage solutions. Bikes should go on racks to save floor space, while shelving and cabinets should be mounted on legs or against the wall to make the room feel larger.

The same goes for the ceiling. If an old-fashioned garage door feels imposing, swap it for some roller garage doors that are contained in units, rather than working their way into the garage space.

Once you’ve opened up as much space as possible, you’ll find it easier to integrate new smart storage solutions in place.

2. Vertical and ceiling garage storage

As alluded to, looking upwards is the best way to make the most of your garage space. Everything should be on the walls or even stored up on the ceiling to increase your capacity to use the floor.

  • Slatwall systems, such as StorePanel, allow you to click hooks, baskets and garage storage shelves on and off, offering proper flexibility.
  • Heavy-duty adjustable wall tracks can be used for items like garden trimmers, shovels and other heavier tools.
  • Magnetic tool strips are a perfect solution for storing high-frequency lightweight tools, like screwdrivers and pliers.
  • Ceiling racks are ideal for racking up clear plastic bins with seasonal items in them.

The floor should be for free movement and for storing your car. Vertical garage storage is the name of the game when it comes to maximising your use of space.

3. Invest in quality garage storage shelves

Flimsy plastic shelving will suffer under the weight of a paint tin. Make sure you invest in high-quality, metal shelving from a reputable brand like Rhino Racking. One of the best things about premium shelving is that it’s generally boltless and easily constructable within around 10 minutes, without being super expensive.

You could also invest in custom garage storage cabinets if you want something a little more homely. These have the capacity to hide the mess behind closed doors. Bucking up your garage shelving ideas for tools and equipment is a great step for maximising your storage.

4. Establishing ‘activity zones’ across the garage

You don’t want your garage to feel like some sort of disorganised ‘dumping ground’. Making zones around your garage space allows you to enhance your mental boundaries around clutter.

  • Install a bench for your shoes, coats and umbrellas, with a heavy-duty welcome mat nearby as a sort of ‘mudroom’ area.
  • Group all your hobby supplies in one corner of the room with dedicated shelving or bays.
  • Use a folding workbench that can fold flat against the wall, while still being super durable for use.

Zoning the interior of your garage is a great way to keep things ordered and organised.

Following these four steps will lead you to having a much more well-organised and optimised garage. Don’t let clutter get in the way of you making the most of this space.
