7 Signs It’s Time to Call a Professional for Your Heat Pump Issues

Every home needs a heating and cooling system to maintain a comfortable temperature. Many homeowners rely on heat pumps to achieve this goal. These units move heat from one location to another. When winter arrives, the heat pump pulls heat from outdoor air and moves it into the home. In summer, it removes hot air from the house and transfers it outside.

Heat pumps run all year, so they often need professional heat pump repairs. Homeowners typically lack the skills and knowledge to complete these repairs but must know when their units are malfunctioning. The following signs indicate it is time to call a professional to address a heat pump issue.

Not Heating or Cooling Properly

Nobody wants to walk into their home to find it is too hot or cold. When this happens, they know the heat pump isn’t working correctly, and they need help. The system should be able to keep the residence at the temperature set on the thermostat. When it doesn’t, the system may be low on refrigerant, the filter might be dirty, or the thermostat could be malfunctioning.

Unusual Noises from the System

Most heat pumps work in the background, and the home’s occupants become accustomed to the noise. They know something is wrong with this system when they hear a new sound. It is not designed to bang, clang, or buzz. Loose parts, motor issues, or a problem with the fan can lead to these new sounds, and a professional is needed to diagnose the problem and fix it.

Continuous Operation

Heat pumps should cycle on and off a few times each hour. When the system runs continuously, there is a problem. It cannot reach the temperature set on the thermostat. A dirty filter, a blocked outdoor unit, or a refrigerant leak could be the culprit.

 Ice Buildup

A little ice may build up on the heat pump during winter. When this ice buildup is excessive, however, it interferes with the system’s normal operation. The defrost cycle may not work properly, or the system may be low on refrigerant. A licensed HVAC technician can find and fix the issue.

Unusual Smells

The heat pump should never emit a burning or musty smell. Any unusual smells suggest the system is malfunctioning. Electrical issues are a concern, or mold might be growing in the system. When the system emits a burning smell, immediately turn it off and call for help.

Rising Energy Bills

The cost of living continues to rise. However, if energy bills significantly jump from one month to the next, it’s best to have the HVAC system checked. Many things can go wrong in this system. When one part fails, the system must work harder to keep the home at the desired temperature, leading to high bills. Have a professional check the system to learn which part has failed and have it fixed. Heating and cooling costs comprise a large part of monthly energy bills, so checking and fixing the system is essential.

No Power to Unit

It’s frustrating when an HVAC system doesn’t work. Without power to the unit, it cannot heat or cool the home. Check for a tripped breaker or blown fuse. If that isn’t the issue, it’s time to call the pros.

Never delay when the heat pump begins acting up. Prompt repairs help keep costs down and keep the home comfortable, which is what everyone wants.
