Interior Design Ideas For Small Spaces 1

Decorating a small space can feel like a challenge. You want to display all of your favorite decor without your home feeling cramped or cluttered. Apartments, dorms, and studios can all be tiny- but that doesn’t mean it needs to be devoid of interior design!

These are some interior design ideas for small spaces. You will keep your personality in the room without feeling overwhelmed with decor. Here is what you need to do!

Use Plenty of Mirrors

Mirrors work well in small rooms. They help distribute natural light by reflecting it around the room and also give the illusion that your room is larger. You can add one large mirror as an accent piece on one of your walls or use several smaller mirrors to create a design.

Use a Rug

Rugs help to cover a bare floor and don’t take up much space. However, you need to ensure that you choose the right size to look good in a small room. You will want to choose a larger rug. Otherwise, a small one will leave the impression that the room is smaller than what it is.

You can also use rugs to design spaces within your room. Set one up on the floor, then create a sitting area on top of it. It will feel much more natural and give your rooms some more personality. Plus, it doesn’t take up much space in a smaller area.

Keep a Strong Theme

With limited space, you can only set out a certain number of accessories. You will want to make sure that all of your items are cohesive under a single theme or color palette. That way, your home won’t feel as cluttered.

If you choose many random items, then you will have problems with your space looking chaotic. Start by choosing one of your favorite pieces, then base the rest of your decor around it. That way, you can be sure to create a pulled-together look.

Add More Storage

With limited space, you can only set out a certain number of accessories. You will want to make sure that all of your items are cohesive under a single theme or color palette. That way, your home won’t feel as cluttered. A ottoman bed can be a great starting point, serving as both a functional and stylish anchor for your space.

Don’t Push Furniture Against the Walls

When you push all of your furniture against the walls, it makes it look like you don’t have enough room. You can make your space appear larger when you bring the furniture in a bit. Make sure that there is room between all of your pieces and the walls.

In a smaller space, this can be a bit challenging. You will want to consider what you use the most often and donate the furniture that goes unused. Doing so will open some of the room up, allowing you to space out your furniture more.

Try Out White Walls

While many people try to avoid white walls, they can be good in a small space. The color is calming and makes your room look brighter and more open. Plus, you can decorate it with paintings and art, making them stand out even more.

Add an Electric Fireplace

Fireplaces work well in any room. They make it feel warmer and cozier. You may think that just because you have a smaller space to work with, you can’t add a fireplace. However, that is not true.

A fireplace electric insert is a great addition and comes in a variety of styles, sizes, and flame colors. You can find smaller ones that will easily fit into whatever space you have available. They make amazing accent pieces and will be sure to be a great conversation starter.

Add More Texture

If there’s not a lot of different textures in your space, it can feel bland. You will want to add rugs, textiles, and weavings that have different textures. If they are rich in color, it will also help them to stand out. Pillows and soft throw blankets are also wonderful ideas.

Use Different Sizes

While you might think you need to only use small furniture and decorations in your space, you don’t want to do that. Smaller items can make your room look awkward since it draws attention to how little space there is.

Instead, try using larger pieces of furniture or big paintings where you can. You want to use a nice balance of differently sized furniture around the home. Place pots of varying sizes and hang differently sized frames around the home to keep your interior balanced.

Try Folding Furniture

Couches that fold down into beds, futons, or other folding furniture work well when you have a guest over. The piece doesn’t take up much space until you unfold it. Then, it can return to its smaller size when you finish using it.

Folding furniture is great when you need to save a lot of space while still looking stylish. There are even desks and tables that you can find that fold into the wall when not in use.

Place Hanging Decor High

Finally, you will want to try placing all of your wall decorations up high. This trick draws the eye further up the wall, making your space look even larger. You will want to take the time to place everything carefully within the home since your interior design determines how cramped it will feel.

Add Personal Touches

No matter how you choose to decorate your small space, you want to add plenty of personal touches! That way, your home will always feel like your own. You can be as creative as you want when it comes to decor.
