Driveway Ideas For Keeping Your Front Of House Tidy

By Voucherix-C Leave a Comment

The driveaway is a luxury that isn’t afforded to every household in the UK, so if you have one, you should treat it with respect. Think of your driveway as the ‘welcome mat’ to your home. It should align with the architecture of your home, moving beyond the realm of random patches of gravel into a nice, intentional part of the landscape. Bucking up your driveway ideas is essential for making the most coherent home exterior possible.

If you’ve got your nice platinum doors and fresh windowsills installed, you don’t want a messy gravel driveway leading towards it. It’s important to consider how your driveway will match the DNA of your property, making sure it’s functional and aesthetic in equal measure.

Driveway ideas for Victorian or Georgian Terraces

Much of the UK is populated with Victorian and Georgian homes, which are defined by vertical interest and intricate brickwork, which should be mirrored by your driveway paving.

  • Use setts or cobbles in granite or sandstone in a fan or herringbone pattern to match your house
  • Greys, charcoal or warm buffs will match the stone or brick colours of the house
  • A contrasting border, such as a dark grey slate edge against a lighter stone, will frame the driveway like a piece of art

Driveway stylings for mid-century or 1930s semi-detached houses

1930s properties are generally made with softer curves or highly accurate geometric window shapes, which are often complemented by gravel modulations.

  • Resin-bound gravel is a smooth surface that stays in place, while still having architectural value and cleanliness
  • Don’t use sharp angles in designs, as light curves mimic the bay windows and archways to make the driveway feel as if it was built at the same time
  • Neutral silvers or even toffee tones can make an impact

Rural cottage driveway ideas

UK cottage designs are a little more organic and asymmetrical, generally surrounded by nature, which doesn’t make for the best venue for hard driveway designs.

  • Honey-coloured gravel driveways are the ultimate English countryside approach, best operated when laid above a honeycomb grid system
  • As above, earthy, honey-tinged tones of gravel are perfect for this organic setting, along with being one of the best materials for durable, low-maintenance driveway setups
  • There’s no need for straight lines; you’ll get a lot more from a winding or tapered path with edges lined by decorative plants

Perfect driveways for modern new-build properties

The goal here is to balance minimalism without sacrificing texture. Many modern properties use a mixture of materials, such as wood cladding, render and anthracite window frames, which should be reflected in the driveway.

  • Large oversized tiles are perfect for those seeking out a high-end, sleeker look, especially when combined with LED strip lighting
  • Soft landscaping insets, such as architectural grasses and creeping thyme are great for breaking up the sea of grey
  • You should be going with monochromatic greys or concrete finishes, which are complemented by the plants

Driveway idea principles

Across these driveway ideas, there are some simple principles to keep in mind which can be applied whatever the era of your home, such as:

  • Repeat materials between the house and the driveway border
  • Make sure the driveway is slightly wider than the house if possible
  • The driveway shouldn’t directly touch the house, so make sure there’s a small green buffer

Take on these ideas and create the ultimate driveway

By following these guidelines, basing your driveway on the architecture of your home and aligning yourself with simple principles, you can build an exterior that feels far more coherent. Being considerate of these steps will take things a step beyond the typical concrete driveway.
