How to Create a Low-Maintenance Home?

There are many benefits to having a low-maintenance home, and many reasons why people might opt to switch to minimalism and low-maintenance. You may be short on time, short on money or simply looking for a simpler way to live.

Creating a low-maintenance home can be done in simple ways and here are some ideas you can try.

Invest in Better Quality

If you want a home which is built to last and does not require regular maintenance, then paying more for higher quality — no matter what it is in your home — will go the extra mile. The more you cut corners on home maintenance, furnishings or key components, and the less you spend, the more likely it is that you will have to constantly fix or replace certain areas of your home. Invest more in better quality for the long-term instead, so you do not have to worry about it.

Switch to Features which are Easier to Clean

A huge part of home maintenance comes from your cleaning schedule. That is why opting for home furnishings or items which are easier to clean will be a big help.

This could be:

  • Hardwood or laminate floors instead of thick carpet
  • Leather sofas and chairs instead of fabric
  • Simple wooden or metal blinds instead of thick fabric curtains
  • Surfaces which are easier to clean, such as smooth wood rather than textured surfaces

Go for Low-Maintenance Houseplants

If you are a plant lover, then having a home full of plants is a must. However, this can also require a lot of maintenance such as watering and light conditions, depending on the plants you choose.

Instead, consider those durable plants which require little attention. There are plenty of low-maintenance houseplants which can thrive without a lot of attention, such as snake plants or cacti. Suppliers like The Stem provide home delivery of low-maintenance houseplants to make it even easier.

Less is More

If you are looking for the ultimate low maintenance home, then minimalism is the way to go. It will mean less to worry about, less to pay for and less to clean. Embracing minimalism could be a shock to the system for those people used to clutter and having a lot of items, but there are simple changes you can make and go for less over time.

Tips for minimalism include:

  • Only having a few key items of furniture
  • One or two focal art pieces rather than walls full of artwork
  • Clean and plain wall colours and decoration
  • Avoiding impulse buys, and only spending money on items for your home that you truly need

Consider Downsizing

If your current home is extremely demanding for you simply because of the size, you may want to consider downsizing. This is, of course, a huge decision, but it is a worthy one if you are struggling with a home which is now too big for you. Downsizing means less rooms to maintain and clean, and provides a useable, workable space which is the perfect size for you.

Use these ideas to plan for your own low-maintenance home.
