Building Decking in Your Garden: A How-To Guide

By Voucherix-C Leave a Comment

A garden decking area is a perfect addition to any home, creating an inviting outdoor space for relaxation, entertainment, and family gatherings. While building decking might seem like quite a daunting task, with the right tools, materials, and guidance, it’s a project that you can tackle successfully. This guide will walk you through the steps to build a beautiful and functional decking area in your garden.

Step 1: Plan Your Decking

Start by deciding how you’ll use your decking. Will it be a space for outdoor dining, a lounging area, or both? Your intended use will influence the size, shape, and features of the decking. Sketch out a rough design and include details like stairs, railings, and built-in seating if desired.

Before you begin construction, check with your local authority for any planning permission or building regulation requirements. Some areas have specific guidelines on deck size, height, and materials. Additionally, consider searching for experienced deck builders near me to find professionals who can ensure your project meets all local codes and standards.

Step 2: Choose Materials

Start by thinking about the materials under the aesthetic parts. You’ll want to opt for durable materials like pressure-treated lumber or steel for the frame and joists to ensure longevity and use corrosion-resistant screws, nails, and connectors to secure the decking and frame. Experts like Deck Brokers have what you need to get the best quality metal decking frame.

When it comes to decking boards, the most common options are:

  • Wood: Pressure-treated pine, cedar, or redwood are durable and cost-effective.
  • Composite: This is a mix of wood fibres and plastic; composite boards are low-maintenance and long-lasting.
  • PVC: 100% synthetic and highly resistant to weather and wear.

Step 3: Prepare the Site

Pick a level area that complements the layout of your garden. Consider factors like sunlight, privacy, and proximity to your home. Then, remove grass, plants, and debris from the construction site. If necessary, level the ground and install a weed barrier to prevent future growth under the decking.

Step 4: Build the Foundation

Use stakes and string to outline the decking’s perimeter. Double-check the measurements to make sure the deck will be square. Once you’ve done this, dig holes for the footings based on your decking’s design. Pour concrete into the holes and insert post anchors – just make sure you allow the concrete to cure before attaching the posts.

Step 5: Frame the Decking

Attach the ledger board to your house if the decking is connected to it. Then, assemble the outer frame and secure it to the footings. You’ll need to space the joists evenly within the frame for structural support. Use joist hangers for added stability.

Step 6: Install Decking Boards

Starting at one end of the frame, lay the decking boards perpendicular to the joists and use spacers to make sure there are even gaps between the boards for drainage and expansion. Secure each board with screws or hidden fasteners for a clean look.

Step 7: Add Railings and Stairs (Optional)

If your decking is elevated, railings and stairs are essential for safety and accessibility. Attach posts to the frame and secure railings between them. For stairs, install stringers and attach treads to create steps.

Step 8: Finish and Protect

As you bring your project to a close, you’ll want to sand the decking surface to remove any splinters and rough edges. Also, apply a weather-resistant sealant or stain to protect your newly installed decking from moisture, UV rays, and wear. Reapply as needed to maintain its appearance and durability.

Step 9: Decorate and Enjoy

The final step is decorating your decking with outdoor furniture, potted plants, and lighting to create a welcoming atmosphere. Add rugs and cushions for extra comfort. Once complete, your new decking will be perfect for enjoying the outdoors with friends and family.
