Sinus Problems? Here’s What a Sinus Doctor in Singapore Recommends for Lasting Relief

By Voucherix-C Leave a Comment

In Singapore, the most common health problem reported by patients is sinus. This problem is usually witnessed in countries with high humidity and relevant allergens, so it is not a big deal if you also suffer from sinus issues. You need to understand the causes, symptoms, and treatments available in your country to achieve lasting relief. So, let’s learn more about the Sinus problem and how you can get proper treatment.

What is Sinusitis?

Sinus problems are also known as Sinusitis. In this condition, the tissues lining the sinus get inflamed, which can lead to blockage or mucus buildup. This condition is usually categorized into two forms: acute and chronic.

  • Acute Sinusitis

Acute sinus problems usually last for 12 weeks and develop when you catch a cold. You may find that the nose is always stuffy and runny, or there is facial pain, and all these symptoms are persistent. You may try antibiotics, home remedies, or even decongestants to treat the issue.

  • Chronic Sinusitis

During the chronic sinus issue, you may find that the symptoms you had during acute Sinusitis last more than 12 weeks. You may try oral medications, but they won’t be able to treat the condition. Moreover, if you suffer from this problem quite a few times a year, a sinus specialist suggests surgical intervention.

Common Symptoms

The most common symptoms you suffer from Sinusitis are nasal congestion, thick, yellow, or green nasal discharge, difficulty breathing through the nose, reduced sensation of smell and taste, and headache. Some even report facial pain or pressure around the cheeks, forehead, eyes, toothache, and bad breath. If the over-the-counter medicines fail to treat the preliminary conditions, it can also lead to additional symptoms such as ear pain, sore throat, nausea, and high fever.

Treatment Options Recommended by Sinus Specialists

Below are some of the common treatment solutions:

  • Home Remedies and Over-the-Counter (OTC) Medications

The most basic way to treat a sinus is using saline nasal spray, which helps reduce congestion. You can also try nasal corticosteroids to treat inflammation or decongestants to elevate nasal conservation. If the mucus accumulation is quite thick, then mucus thinner can be used, and to manage the discomfort associated with the condition, you can take a pain reliever.

  • Medical Interventions

Healthcare specialists can also prescribe antibiotics for bacterial infections. In addition, allergy management or immunotherapy is also prescribed, which helps prevent recurrent Sinusitis and address the root cause: allergy.

  • Surgical Options – Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS)

When every over-the-counter medicine, home remedy, or even prescribed antibiotic fails to treat the condition, Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery is the only solution. It is a minimal-invasion procedure where blockages are removed using endoscopy. The surgery helps restore normal sinus drainage and has a quicker recovery phase. It can be performed with local anesthesia without any external incisions.

Conclusion

If you are going through severe sinus symptoms, you must consult a specialist who can provide a tailored treatment plan based on your requirements. Moreover, to reduce the risk of developing recurrent episodes, you must maintain good hygiene, manage allergies, and avoid smoking. You can also use a humidifier to keep the indoor air moist and free from allergens.
