DIY Wellness Activities You Can Do At Home

Wellness has been given an extra focus of the limelight in these times. In social media today, we are exposed to different routines that our friends usually share on our news feed to cope with being quarantined at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There have been so many posts about new trends in gardening, a hundred ways to enjoy dalgona coffee and amusing TikTok videos – all these kept us hooked and busy. These activities sure bring happiness and entertainment altogether. When you are happy and your brain is fully rested and relaxed, you are doing yourself good by reducing stress and tension.

There are two kinds of stress: happy and bad. Happy stress is when you rattle yourself on something that you love like choosing one out of two dresses that are on sale, picking the right color of shoes or simply being problematic about where to spend your money (we know you). This does not really pose a problem and usually does not take a toll on your health, just your wallet.

Bad stress, on the other hand, can be caused by being bullied, from working too much, losing a job, having relationship problems, busy schedule and the list goes on. Generally, when you feel like you do not have any control to overcome these situations, you are overwhelmed or probably just bored of having no change and certainty in your life, that is bad stress. These often lead to cardiovascular disease, obesity, and fall risk behaviors.

The two types of stress are extremely different. However, you can combat any form of stress by doing wellness activities within the comforts of your own home. You can also ask the rest of the family to join you so that it would be more fun and that the joy of wellness springs into the air of your home. After all, if you wish to lead a happy and healthy life, it’s high time that you start giving your well-being the importance it deserves, said Thomas Edison.

You’re on your way to a fitter, healthier and happier you.

Let’s get the ball rolling, shall we?

  1. Go healthy to be happy.
They say you are what you eat. So are you a greasy 2000-calorie cheeseburger? I don’t think it would hurt so much to do a little self-check on what is on your plate and switch to eating plant-based meals. Right portions of meat, veggies, fruits, fiber and grains will definitely give you the energy boost without worrying too much about fat and oil. When you eat the right food, you feel good and are always in a good mood.
  2. Get smart with art.
Have you ever tried making a hanging shelf or mirror? How about practicing  your floristry by learning how to make a bouquet of flowers? There’s a lot of smart art ideas you can do with a bunch of “How To’s” online. You can even make your own lavender soap or candle with a few steps from the internet.
  3. Practice altruism.
Altruism is the practice of disinterested and selfless concern for other people’s well-being. In other words, giving – which makes you feel good. In Suttie and Marsh (2010, altruistic behavior releases endorphins in the brain, producing the positive feeling known as the “helper’s high”. When was the last time you gave someone something? Both giving and receiving emit wonderful feelings. Go on, send someone a random gift and thank him or her for the friendship. At this day and age of online shopping, gifting has been made possible even from a distance.
  4. Be whole and holistic.
Maintaining life with a balanced mind, body and spirit is the total objective of holistic living. It has become a trend where people are starting to eat more nutritiously, choose organic over commercial products, and engage in activities like yoga and meditation which induce peace of mind. One of the pursuits of holistic living is also to promote a sustainable lifestyle which, in the big picture, attempts to reduce the society’s use of the earth’s natural resources. Stop by an eco store one of these days and learn how to live sustainably.
  5. Negative energy detox.
In Statista, the average daily social media usage worldwide amounts to 145 minutes per day. Imagine how much we are exposed to different news, rants, complaints, political issues, jealousy, hatred and all others that radiate negative energy. Detox yourself by either putting your phone away or unfollowing the sources that do not hamper in killing your vibe. Respect your mood and respect your energy. There are plenty other things that you can do to entertain yourself without triggering mental stress, make use of refreshing breaks.

Before doing all of these tips, ensure that you can commit to each of them so that its effect will be at the optimum. Enjoy each step and put your heart to it, you will not reap its benefits if you are just doing this for the “gram” or to just “get it done”.

We are glad that you are taking one step towards improving your overall health and wellness today. Stay strong and live long.
