There may be a few fixtures to get out of the way first, but the Steel City Derby is already in the back of football fans’ minds. In the city of Sheffield, this means a lot. Bragging rights will be at stake in the first Steel City Derby of the season.

Sports betting companies will certainly be on alert when the Steel City Derby rolls around, and many of these run separate casino sites as well. If we were going to compare the derby to one of the games, it would perhaps be like roulette in a way, due to the fact that the outcome sometimes feels like it can be random.
Roulette games are obviously different and playing roulette online is a loose comparison in some ways. However, there are similarities; no matter what happens and how people prepare for the game, once it starts, any outcome is still possible. This is true around the roulette table as well as in football. A number of people in football say that during derbies “the form book goes out of the window” so rather than being predictable, the game can go in any direction.
The head-to-head results of the two teams going into the game certainly prove how close outcomes can be over time. The derby has been won 49 times by United, 48 by Wednesday, and there have been 47 draws, according to the stats. That is an incredibly even breakdown, so who will come out on top this time around?
A history of the Steel City Derby
Before we look at the form this season and make any predictions (something that may well be foolish!) it is important to look at some of the history of this fixture, which is a historic and fiercely contested football rivalry between Sheffield’s most prominent clubs, Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday. The name comes from Sheffield’s industrial past, as it was once the centre of the British steel industry (but you probably already knew that).
The rivalry dates back to the 1890s, with the first official derby match being played in 1893. Over the years, the Steel City Derby has become one of the most intense and passion-filled fixtures in English football, as the two clubs have represented different parts of the city, but this has become more blurred as the years go by.
The atmosphere at these derby games is unreal, with fans displaying fierce loyalty to their teams. Matches have been played in various competitions but in recent years, league matchups between these two have been limited.
Both clubs have spent time outside the Premier League in the last few years but Sheffield United were there just last season, and the intensity of the rivalry remains undiminished by the fact that it is now a Championship fixture. The Steel City Derby continues to capture the passion of Sheffield football fans. The 24-25 season will continue this long pattern.
The recent history of the derby
People are excited when derby games come around and we don’t intend to ruin this for anyone, but there is a stunning stat about this fixture…three of the last four times the teams have played, the game results have been 0-0. Yes, it may be a fixture people look for as soon as it is announced, but this game has a recent history of tetchy, goalless draws.
Amazingly, these four fixtures are the only times in the last 10 years that the teams have met in the league. The promotions and relegations both teams have endured have meant that they don’t meet face-to-face every year.
Amid these 0-0 fixtures, we also saw a 2-4 result in which United took points away from Hillsborough. Leon Clarke scored twice, and in spite of something of a comeback from Wednesday, the job had been completed.
24-25’s Steel City Derby
This year, the teams have already shown some very different form. Wednesday have been promoted from League One after spending last season there, and many people expect that they will be in a relegation battle this year. At the time of writing this, they are just above the relegation zone in the Championship Table. At the other end of that table, we see Sheffield United, not quite doing enough to get into the top two but looking like they could be a good bet for finishing in the top six this season.
Predictions
What are the predictions for the game? Well, it is fair to say that nobody knows exactly what to expect when there is a Steel City Derby. However, a few things could be classed as likely outcomes.
The first prediction (and not a particularly bold one) is that there will be some cards shown in the game. It is very likely that the two teams will be fired up by the atmosphere. The Blades will be at home (Bramall Lane) for this fixture and this could give them the advantage.
A low-scoring game is also likely, though this could go out of the window with an early goal. The teams are likely to be nervy, and this derby means a lot to people. It is almost inevitable that there will be some shaky defensive moments but also a general focus on keeping things tight and not conceding against the bitter rivals.
The game is going to be shown on Sky Sports Football, and it is a 12.30 lunchtime kick-off. This is the slot a lot of derby games are given these days among a rethought television deal for Championship teams.
Nobody can say for sure what is going to happen, but it is likely that the Sheffield United team will have just a little too much for their rivals. On paper, their squad has more quality and it will just take one of their best players to come up with a top performance to tip the scales.
The derby is usually played in a respectful but fiery way, and this is what we expect to see when the teams meet in November.
