The key differences between Bingo in the US and UK

Bingo feb25 v-1

When comparing Bingo across different countries, you will notice notable differences in how the game is played. Despite sharing the same name and core structure, Bingo has developed distinct versions in the United States and the United Kingdom, each with unique rules and formats.

With the rise of online Bingo rooms, you can now access both versions online and at land-based venues. For those interested in how these variations compare, let’s examine the key differences between American and British Bingo.

The American Bingo journey

After centuries of popularity in Europe, the game eventually made its way to the United States in the 1900s. Initially, many Americans encountered it under the name Beano, as players used beans to mark off numbers rather than using a pen or dauber.

Sources differ on how the name Bingo emerged, but when New York businessman Edwin S. Lowe helped commercialise the game, he adopted this name for the version that became widespread in the US. With a five-by-five grid format and a free space in the centre, American Bingo introduced thousands of card variations, making it more likely that a single winner would emerge at a time.

Now, let’s explore the most significant differences between these two popular formats.

1. Number of balls in play

One of the most noticeable differences between the two versions is the number of balls used. UK Bingo typically operates with a full set of 90 numbered balls, whereas US Bingo uses 75.

This difference affects gameplay in practical ways. With fewer numbers to be called, American Bingo tends to move at a quicker pace, and winners may be determined sooner. In contrast, British Bingo, with more numbers in circulation, usually takes longer to complete, as players must mark off more numbers before achieving a winning combination.

2. Card design and format

The layout of Bingo cards is another key distinction. UK Bingo cards have a rectangular three-row by nine-column, while US Bingo uses a square five-by-five grid, typically featuring a free space in the centre.

British players focus on completing horizontal lines first, progressing toward a “full house” by marking all numbers on their card. Meanwhile, American Bingo offers more variation in how a player can potentially win. In addition to completing lines horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, some games introduce specific patterns that players must achieve to win. These variations mean that different games may feature unique winning conditions.

3. Game pace and structure

These structural differences affect the overall gameplay style. The 75-ball format in the US often leads to quicker rounds, with different pattern-based win conditions depending on the specific game. Meanwhile, the UK’s 90-ball format follows a structured progression, where players first aim for a single line, then two lines, and finally a full house.

Each format appeals to different preferences, whether a you enjoy the pattern-based approach of American Bingo or the progressive stages of the British version.

Both versions of Bingo continue to be widely enjoyed across different regions. The availability of online Bingo rooms allows you to access both formats easily, with the distinct rules and structures that define each version. Whether you play with a 75-ball or 90-ball format, Bingo remains a chance-based game with various ways to try and achieve a winning result.
