Want a Height-adjustable Desk? Here’s What’s On the Market

By Voucherix-C Leave a Comment

With more people spending their days hunched over their computers, the need for height-adjustable desks continues to increase. After all, not only are these desks comfortable, but they have also been proven to boost productivity by adjusting to your needs as the day progresses. But what options are on the market, and how can you choose the right fit? We break down the options for you.

Types of Height-Adjustable Desks.

While height-adjustable desks may address similar needs, their performance comes down to their mechanism, as seen in the following cases.

Electric Desks

These are the most convenient options in the market as they allow you to control their position with the simple push of a button. What’s more, they quickly learn your preferences and store these in their memories, enabling you to switch from one position to another without going through the configuration process again. Add their smooth operation and the ability to support heavy loads, and it’s easy to see why many people choose an electric height-adjustable desk for their spaces.

But is it all rainbows and roses? The con in these options is that they require an electric cost and typically come at a higher price than their manual counterparts. As such, these are factors you must consider when selecting a desk.

Manual Desks

As the name suggests, these desks require you to position them to match your needs physically. While this gives you precise control over where the desk stands, it is also time-consuming and cumbersome. On the upside, taking on this control allows you to pay less for the desk. What’s more, with the elimination of most electronic components (they still have some despite the manual tag), you can operate the desk without an electricity source.

So, what are the downsides? Well, you must be willing to put in the effort and time to configure your standing or sitting position for these desks. And that means you don’t enjoy features typical of electric desks, such as memory presets.

Pneumatic Desks

Unlike electric desks that rely on technology and manual desks that require your physical effort, this category of desks operates on a pneumatic lever. On the upside, the lever does not require an electric outlet. It allows you to change the desk’s position without much physical effort.

But on the downside, these desks feature limited height ranges compared to electric desks, which can be an issue for someone who wants specific settings. While reliable, pneumatic systems also often need maintenance over time to ensure smooth and quiet adjustments. With these desks falling smack in the middle of manual and electric options, their price range is thus higher than that of the manual desks.

Crank Desks

This desk stands out for its simple mechanical system that allows you to change its position using a crank. So, you can bid adieu to electricity and get more accuracy than a typical manual desk. However, this desk has some cons. For one, you must manually crank the desk, which requires physical effort. Secondly, manual cranking is much slower than using a lever or pushing a button. And finally, it can be noisy, which may not be ideal in a work environment.

What Option Wins?

Your choice of a desk will come down to your needs, preferences, and overall budget. For example, someone who wants a convenient way to adjust their desk height without going through the configurations each time will find that the electric height-adjustable desk works best. However, a budget-conscious buyer may find that the manual desk is the better option due to its affordability.
